The Republic of Angola through its National Assembly convened a workshop on 26 May 2024 to review the country's HIV and AIDS Law no. 8/04, of 1 November, enacted in 2004. The revisions will enhance an enabling policy environment for Country’s HIV response.

This follows a series of ongoing HIV efforts for the country notably the recent “Assessment of the Legal Environment for HIV and the Right to Sexual and Reproductive Health” that underscored the need to protect human rights of key populations to increase access to HIV prevention, treatment and care services as well as strengthen social assistance. Angola also signed up for the SIDA-funded SADC Parliamentary Forum SRHR, HIV and AIDS Governance Project that aims to build capacity of Parliamentarians to effectively review and revise laws whilst ensuring key aspects like Universal Health Care, promotion of gender equality, elimination of sexual and gender-based violence, child marriage, among others are included.

Participants included representatives of civil society organisations and members of parliament to identify gaps in the country's HIV and AIDS law, propose revisions and to build stronger partnerships among various stakeholders in the national response to HIV and Aids.

SADC PF secretary-general Boemo Sekgoma hailed the workshop as a “groundbreaking intervention” and a bold step towards an “enabling policy environment”.
