The seventh chapter of the 2018 Manual for Male Circumcision under Local Anaethesia guides providers in screening clients and preparing to provide voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC). It addresses screening potential clients; obtaining a focused history from the client; identifying history of and need for tetanus toxoid-containing vaccination; performing a focused physical examination, including an examination of the male genitalia; understanding the anatomy of the penis; identifying, through history taking and physical examination, the contraindications for performing male circumcision at the clinic level; selecting the correct conventional or device-based procedure based on a client’s age, preferences, and any contraindications for circumcision; and using or adapting the World Health Organization’s Surgical safety checklist, which has been modified for VMMC, to prepare for VMMC provision.
