In advance of the June 2021 United Nations General Assembly High-Level Meeting on AIDS, UNAIDS reports that dozens of countries achieved or exceeded the 2020 targets set by the United Nations General Assembly in 2016, but most countries fell short of those goals and progress in HIV prevention lagged far behind HIV treatment. Among the recommendations for accelerating HIV prevention are to increase national leadership and resource allocation for proven HIV combination prevention, including condom promotion and distribution, pre-exposure prophylaxis, voluntary medical male circumcision, harm reduction, comprehensive sexuality education, screening and treatment of sexually transmitted infections, and viral suppression through antiretroviral therapy.
