Investment in research on voluntary medical male circumcision fell by 37 percent to just US$6 million in 2020, according to the 16th HIV Prevention Research and Development Investments Report. The report shows that almost all of that funding came from a single donor, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. This drop in VMMC investment is part of an an eight-year trend of flat or declining funding for HIV prevention R&D.
