Three randomised controlled trials conducted in Kenya, South Africa, and Uganda provided conclusive evidence that medically performed male circumcision is safe and can reduce men's risk of HIV infection during vaginal sex by about 60 percent; follow-up studies confirmed a long-term protective effect.
