Published in BMC Public Health, this study tested an intervention to improve the safety of traditional male circumcision among the Xhosa in South Africa by training providers. High rates of complications were found among initiates who were circumcised by the traditional providers who had received the training. The authors conclude that the "findings show weak support for scaling up traditional circumcision."
