Voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) for HIV prevention is on a fast track, with 3 million men circumcised in the priority countries in 2014 alone, the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) reports in a section (pp. 50-56) of its annual World AIDS Day publication. This section includes case studies on innovations in South Africa, Tanzania, Lesotho, and Zimbabwe that have helped increase uptake of VMMC and link men to HIV prevention and care services. The report notes that increasing VMMC coverage in lower-performing countries and maintaining the current rate of scale-up in higher performing countries will be challenging, because investment in this intervention has not kept pace with demand.
