Mrs Rebecca Akufo-Addo, the First Lady of Ghana, has urged for a united front to fight stigma, promote human rights, and ensure fair access to HIV prevention services for all.
“These barriers do not only worsen the spread of HIV but also perpetuate inequality and injustice, it is imperative that we address these barriers head-on with courage and determination if we are to succeed in our mission,” she said.
In 2023, UNAIDS developed an approach to estimate the number (i.e., the denominator) of priority groups at risk for acquiring HIV at sub-national level (provinces and/or districts) who need intensified HIV prevention programmes. The resulting tool, the Sub-national HIV Estimates in Priority Populations (SHIPP) Tool, is pre-populated with relevant data for 34 priority countries in Sub-Saharan Africa.
This case study of an innovative social media campaign to increase condom awareness in Zambia highlights opportunities for collaborative approaches to designing and implementing cost-effective virtual condom promotion campaigns targeting adolescents and young people. It is part of a series documenting promising and best practices supported by the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria’s Strategic Initiative on Condom Programme Stewardship (2021-2023) in the East and Southern Africa region implemented through a UNAIDS/UNFPA partnership engaging private sector entities.
With less than two years left to reach ambitious targets for 2025, the GPC’s annual report offers a clear picture of current progress in advancing HIV prevention, identifying what is working well and what needs to change. This report summarises the findings of 2023 HIV prevention scorecards for 40 countries, assesses progress made in implementing the ten actions of the 2025 HIV Prevention Road Map and provides key messages on HIV prevention that stakeholders can use in ongoing sustainability discussions and other critical engagements.
