Clinical trials of two devices for performing voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) on adults and adolescents showed that PrePex and the ShangRing were safe and acceptable, but questions remained about their use in routine service delivery. This collection of 17 articles, published in the Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes, examines subsequent research on the introduction of the two devices, which have been prequalified by the World Health Organization. Studies from eight countries address important issues such as safety, acceptability, training, and the cost of using these devices to perform VMMC for HIV prevention.
